En el último artículo hemos visto cómo formar el gerundio y la forma en -ing.
Ahora vamos un paso más allá y analizamos en detalles cuando el infinitivo puede traducirse con la forma en -ing y cuando con la forma con el TO
La forma -ing traduce el infinitivo cuando
1. éste es precedido por una preposición, ya que en este caso el infinitivo tienen función de sustantivo.
Ej.: Estoy contento de ir de vacaciones
I am happy of going on holidays
Ellos piensan coger el bus
They think of taking the bus
2. es el sujeto de la frase:
Ej.: Fumar es peligroso
Smoking is dangerous
Hacer deporte es bueno
Doing sport is good
Cocinar es mi pasión
Cooking is my passion
Sin embargo, hay determinados casos en los cuales el infinitivo se traduce precedido por el TO.
A. El infinitivo se traduce con el TO cuando éste sigue un adjetivo:
Ej.: Es bonito vivir en Lanzarote
It is nice to live in Lanzarote
No es fácil correr con el viento
It is not easy to run with the wind
B. Después de algunos verbos
To like to I like to go to London
To want to She wants to go on holidays
To hope to He hopes to win the championship
To manage to We managed to buy a house
To choose to She chooses to buy a red car
To agree to we agreed to work at night
C. Cuando contestamos a preguntas con WHY:
Ej.:
¿Porqué compras este billete? Para ir de vacaciones con mi familia.
Why do you buy this ticket? To go on holidays with my family
¿Porqué va ahí? Para encontrarse con sus amigos
Why does he go there? To meet his friends
No es un tema dificil, solamente es necesaria mucha práctica y verás que con el tiempo te resultará sencillo saber cuándo usar el infinitivo con el TO o con la forma -ing.
